"apparent explosion ... that resulted in a fire that destroyed the home."
"Judge Goodstein was walking on the beach when the fire started,"
"Her husband, Arnie, was in the house with children and perhaps grandchildren. The family had to escape by jumping from a window or balcony. I'm told there were injuries from the fall, such as broken legs."
"Arnie's injuries may have been the most serious, for he was airlifted to the hospital,"
Judge Diane Goodstein, 69, was walking her dogs Saturday morning when her Edisto Beach home caught fire and was destroyed. Her husband, former state lawmaker Arnold Goodstein, 81, their son Arnold Goodstein II, and other guests were inside and escaped through the upper stories into marshes, where emergency responders rescued them by kayak. Two family members and a third person were hospitalized. South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice John Kittredge described the incident as an apparent explosion that destroyed the home and said some family members suffered injuries from the fall; Arnie was airlifted. Local law enforcement is investigating and has not determined whether the fire was accidental or arson. Multiple sources reported that Judge Goodstein had recently received death threats after issuing a ruling preventing the state from releasing personal data of more than 3.3 million voters; the Department of Justice had requested names, addresses, birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers.
