Derlis Snaider Chusin Toaquiza, a 19-year-old former high school student from Queens, has been in a Texas immigration detention center since June 4. He was detained after attending an immigration hearing with his mother, who was not detained. His family fled Ecuador seeking asylum due to discrimination. Following his detention, he faced harsh conditions before a Texas judge is expected to grant his release on a $20,000 bond, funded by the Envision Freedom Fund, allowing his return to New York.
"We are beyond thrilled that Derlis will soon be returning home to New York to be with his family where he belongs."
"At the same time, our happiness does not erase the fact that Derlis was unjustly detained at his immigration court hearing, torn away from his family and everyday life."
