Maria Elena Hernandez is joining a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from Nicaragua, Honduras, and others. The decision affects 72,000 Hondurans and 4,000 Nicaraguans, protecting them from deportation. Hernandez fears returning to Nicaragua due to the authoritarian government and human rights violations. The lawsuit, filed by the National TPS Alliance, argues the administration's actions were driven by racial animus and ignored the realities in these home countries. Hernandez has lived and worked in the U.S. for decades, contributing positively to society.
Hernandez, who is from Nicaragua and a Local 32BJ SEIU member, said she has "good reason to fear" being returned to her native country because of the authoritarian regime in power.
Hernandez stated, "I always believed that the government of the United States would honor all my contributions. I have paid all my taxes, obeyed all the laws. Why is the government trying to get rid of so many people who have contributed so much to this country?"
