Mayor Karen Bass announced a plan to provide direct cash assistance to individuals impacted by immigration raids conducted under the Trump administration. The aid will be given through cash cards, valued at a couple of hundred dollars, distributed in collaboration with immigrant rights groups. Bass highlighted a specific family's plight that faced potential eviction due to income loss after one member's detention. The funding source will be philanthropic partners, and the initiative compares to the earlier 'Angeleno Cards' program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"You have people who don't want to leave their homes, who are not going to work, and they are in need of cash," said Mayor Bass, emphasizing the financial struggles faced by families affected by immigration raids.
The mayor noted that the aid program differs from prior initiatives as it will be funded entirely by philanthropic partners and will be distributed through organizations advocating for immigrant rights.
