Trump urged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to press Powell and warned Bessent that he would be fired if interest rates were not fixed quickly. Trump accused Powell of wasteful spending on a $4 billion building and compared it unfavorably to his own ballroom project. An interlocutor pleaded not to fire Powell, noting Powell had only months left and calling him a voice of reason. Powell was appointed in 2018.
