Howard Lutnick Cut $5 Million Check to House Republicans After Scheduling His Epstein Testimony

Howard Lutnick donated $5 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a major House Republican super PAC supporting Speaker Mike Johnson. The donation occurred April 1, less than a month after the House Oversight Committee announced he agreed to testify voluntarily about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The testimony took place May 6. Lawmakers had considered issuing a subpoena before he agreed to appear. Democrats questioned him publicly during a February hearing as scrutiny increased. Previously released Epstein-related records placed Lutnick’s name in more than 250 records. The records indicated he traveled to Epstein’s private island in 2012 and had additional contact. In testimony, Lutnick acknowledged three encounters and described them as meaningless while condemning Epstein’s conduct. A Commerce Department spokesperson said the donation was made in his personal capacity.

A spokesperson for the Commerce Department defended the donation in a statement to the outlet, saying, Mr. Lutnick made a political donation in his personal capacity, just as many Cabinet Secretaries from both parties have done in the past."
