A new report from the Global Citizenship Observatory highlights that the ability to secure citizenship through naturalization is deteriorating. It reveals that many countries, especially in Europe, have adopted laws enabling the revocation of citizenship based on national security. The practice is linked to the rise of security-related policies following significant global events such as 9/11. The report notes that there are now multiple avenues for stripping citizenship, with nearly 80% of countries having rules addressing these situations, indicating a troubling trend in global citizenship practices.
Naturalisation has often been seen as the best way to secure the right to live in a country and be able to return, but this notion is becoming increasingly fragile.
With the growing number of armed conflicts, many countries have introduced provisions for withdrawing citizenship on national security grounds, indicating an increasing securitisation of citizenship.
