President Trump recently indicated his administration is contemplating a controversial plan to detain U.S. citizens and send them to prisons in El Salvador. During a press event with President Nayib Bukele, Trump referenced the need for additional prison facilities in El Salvador for these citizens, which raised serious constitutional concerns. Critics, including legal scholars, argue this proposal violates civil liberties and lacks any legal basis for deporting U.S. citizens, potentially evading judicial oversight. Bukele expressed readiness to accommodate such prisoners, echoing the alarming nature of the proposal.
"The homegrowns are next, the homegrowns. You've got to build about five more places," Trump said to Bukele, referring to prison space in El Salvador to house U.S. citizens.
David Bier at the Cato Institute commented, "It's obviously unconstitutional, obviously illegal. There's no authority in any U.S. law to deport U.S. citizens and certainly not to imprison them in a foreign country."
Bukele suggested El Salvador is ready to incarcerate Americans, stating, "Yeah, we've got space," indicating willingness to assist with U.S. citizen detentions.
