Donald Trump’s second term features a strong push for territorial expansion, notably the annexation of Greenland. Despite significant local opposition, including from its political leaders and citizens, the Trump administration plans a high-profile delegation visit to Greenland, which is viewed as a show of power rather than genuine interest in cooperative relations. Outgoing Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede and incoming Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have both firmly rejected the idea of annexation, emphasizing a desire for Greenland's independence and self-governance, united against perceived U.S. aggression.
Outgoing Greenland prime minister Mute Egede blasted the scheduled trip as "highly aggressive," labeling it a clear attempt by the United States to flex its power as Trump threatens to take over the island.
We don't want to be Americans. No, we don't want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders, and we want our own independence in the future,” said Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
All party chairmen - cannot accept the repeated statements on annexation and control of Greenland... we find this conduct unacceptable to friends and allies in a defense alliance.
His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump's mission - and the pressure will increase.
