Nancy Pelosi will not seek reelection after serving 20 terms in Congress. Pelosi became the first woman elected Speaker of the House in 2007 and previously served as House Democratic leader and minority leader. Pelosi began in a 1987 special election, emphasized her background moving “from the kitchen to the Congress,” and built a reputation as an appropriator and a legislative strategist who could marshal Democratic votes on must-pass bills. Pelosi’s tenure included leading Democrats to a House majority in 2006, presiding over a speakership during a financial crisis, and facing sustained criticism from Republican opponents.
