Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
Briefly

NIH has decided to disinvite numerous scientists nominated under President Joe Biden from advisory councils responsible for grant decisions. This action aims to align the councils with the current administration's priorities, jeopardizing the expertise necessary for funding decisions. Advisory councils will be left understaffed, which risks inadequate review of research proposals. The former director of the NHGRI, Eric Green, criticized the move, highlighting a significant reduction in council members which threatens the quality of funding reviews. The NIH and its parent agency, HHS, have not commented on these developments.
In an unprecedented move, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will soon disinvite dozens of scientists who were about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant applications for the agency.
The move will leave advisory councils at most of the NIH's institutes understaffed, leaving them without a breadth of expertise in making final decisions about which research projects the agency funds.
Eric Green, who was director of the NIH's National Human Genome Research Institute, states that without the vetted members, the institute's panel will have only 6 out of its potential 18 members.
Green emphasizes that having a small advisory group is detrimental, as these groups are crucial for providing robust reviews of funding applications.
