"The detention center was ordered to ship out all detainees and close within 60 days. The ruling by Judge Kathleen M. Williams stemmed from a lawsuit filed by the Friends of the Everglades and the Miccosukee Tribe that accused the Sunshine State of violating the National Environmental Policy Act. A stay on Williams' ruling was granted by a three-judge panel in Atlanta on Thursday, pending an appeal. Alligator Alcatraz can continue holding detainees for now."
Deportation Depot opened at the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, about 45 miles from Jacksonville, with capacity for 1,500 detainees and just over 100 moved there so far. The facility was created to provide additional shelter as ICE rounds up migrants statewide. The opening follows legal battles over the $250 million Alligator Alcatraz detention center, which faced an order to close after a NEPA lawsuit by Friends of the Everglades and the Miccosukee Tribe. A federal appeals panel issued a stay allowing Alligator Alcatraz to continue holding detainees pending appeal. Some detainees alleged mistreatment; Trump administration officials denied those claims.
