"We are facing rhetoric from elected officials that is so dehumanizing and cruel, especially against immigrant populations,"
"The residents of Miami were ready to be done with that."
"Tonight's result is yet another warning sign to Republicans that voters are fed up with their out-of-touch agenda that is raising costs,"
Eileen Higgins, 61, won the Miami mayoral election, defeating Republican Emilio Gonzalez, who had received President Donald Trump's endorsement. Higgins will be the first woman to lead Miami. She campaigned as a proud Democrat in a nonpartisan race and focused on immigration concerns, saying many residents feared family members being detained. Higgins led by about 19 percentage points with nearly all votes counted. The victory breaks a long Republican streak in the city, draws national party attention, provides Democrats momentum ahead of the 2026 midterms, and follows endorsements and support from prominent national Democrats.
