Columbia University is suspending or expelling around 80 students for their participation in pro-Palestinian protests in May. Punishments include probation, suspensions of one to three years, and degree revocations. Following the protests, the university initiated an investigation into policy violations, leading to interim suspensions. The final decisions were made after individual assessments and deliberations. Columbia emphasized the importance of respecting university policies for maintaining a thriving academic community. Amid pressures over alleged antisemitism and funding cuts, Columbia is also reforming its disciplinary processes to regain federal funding.
Columbia University is suspending and expelling dozens of students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests by seizing a part of the school's main library in early May.
The university began an investigation into rules violations, banned participants from the campus and placed them on interim suspension.
"Disruptions to academic activities are in violation of University policies and rules, and such violations will necessarily generate consequences," the university said in its statement.
Columbia has agreed to implement a series of policy reforms in an attempt to regain the federal funding, which included overhauling the student disciplinary process.
