Children of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson honor his legacy as memorial services set for next week
"Our father is a man who dedicated his life to public service to gain, protect and defend civil rights and human rights to make our nation better, to make the world more just, our people better neighbors with each other,"
"The People's Celebration"
Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. died Tuesday at his Chicago home after battling a rare neurological disorder that affected his ability to move and speak. Five of his adult children gathered on the steps outside his longtime Chicago home to give emotional tributes, mixing jokes about his stubbornness with tears. Memorial services were scheduled for next week, including two days of lying in repose at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters. A public memorial called "The People's Celebration" was planned for Feb. 27 at the House of Hope, with homegoing services the following day at Rainbow PUSH. Jackson rose to prominence as a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr., led Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, and stood beside King when King was killed on April 4, 1968. Flowers and large portraits were placed outside his home as remembrances poured in.
