CBS News owner Paramount settles Trump's lawsuit over '60 Minutes' interview for $16 million - Poynter
Briefly

Paramount agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump over the editing of a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris for $16 million. Trump claimed the editing was deceptive and interfered with the election. Although many experts viewed the lawsuit as lacking legal merit, Paramount decided to settle, possibly due to its pending merger approval with Skydance Media and ongoing FCC inquiries. The settlement includes payment towards Trump's library and legal fees, alongside a promise to release future interview transcripts.
Paramount has argued that it did nothing wrong. Regardless, the company likely decided to settle because it is currently awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission for its proposed merger with Skydance Media.
Trump had argued that Paramount's news division, CBS News, interfered with the election by airing two different clips of an October interview with Harris, then the Democratic presidential nominee.
Seth Stern stated, "Paramount's spineless decision to settle Trump's patently unconstitutional lawsuit is an insult to the First Amendment and to the journalists and viewers of '60 Minutes.'"
In settling, Paramount will pay $16 million towards Trump's future presidential library and legal fees and agreed to release transcripts of '60 Minutes' interviews with presidential candidates.
