AAFA Shares Nominations for USTR's 2025 Notorious Markets List
"Recognizing these platforms as notorious markets simply reflects the reality that counterfeit fashion is widely available on some of America's most visited online marketplaces and social media platforms,"
"The Trump Administration has an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the insufficient steps these marketplaces take to block counterfeiters while raising awareness among American consumers about this hidden online danger."
"AAFA and its members are concerned about the potential role AI plays in developing and deploying fraudulent advertisements across Meta's social media platforms,"
"believe that most of the counterfeit ads that [they] have come across within Meta have AI-generated elements within them"
The American Apparel and Footwear Association submitted nominations to the U.S. Trade Representative for the Notorious Markets List, requesting Meta be listed for Instagram and Facebook, Alibaba for AliExpress and Taobao, and Shopee for alleged counterfeit sales. AAFA cited widespread availability of counterfeit fashion on major online marketplaces and social media and urged stronger enforcement to block counterfeiters. The group highlighted concerns about artificial intelligence enabling mass population of fraudulent advertisements on Meta platforms. Anonymous members reported that most counterfeit ads encountered on Meta contain AI-generated elements and claimed some ads may have been created using company tools.
