Your favorite band has a new single? It might be AI
"I woke up to DMs on Instagram saying, 'Apparently Here We Go Magic released a new track?' Sure doesn't sound like you,' Temple said. 'Then I realized it was on Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, all the streaming platforms.'"
"'This is by no means a new problem,' said Charley Kiefer, who heads digital account strategy at the music label Secretly Canadian, which released Here We Go Magic's albums. 'But it's one that's likely to become increasingly prevalent without remediation from both plug and play distributors and DSPs,' he said, referring to digital service providers like Spotify."
AI-generated songs and artwork are being uploaded to streaming platforms to impersonate inactive and deceased musicians, often appearing on official artist pages. Los Angeles musician Luke Temple discovered an AI-created song credited to his band Here We Go Magic on Spotify, Tidal and YouTube despite no releases since 2015. Similar uploads targeted Uncle Tupelo, the late Sophie, and Blaze Foley, producing misleading content and seeking royalties. Many AI imitations are unconvincing, but they can damage reputations and monetize inactive catalogs. Music labels and digital distributors warn that the problem will grow without remediation from plug-and-play distributors and DSPs.
