Wan Yee Ng was arrested in June for attempting to smuggle 29 Eastern box turtles, a protected species, from Vermont to Canada, having wrapped them in socks.
As reported, the U.S. Border Patrol became suspicious due to her repeated rentals of the same Vermont residence, known for prior smuggling activities, drawing attention to her.
Ms. Ng faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty. Sentencing is scheduled for December, as the case highlights concerns over wildlife trafficking.
The turtles were found individually wrapped in socks inside her duffle bag, intended to protect their shells and prevent them from moving, illustrating unusual smuggling methods.
