On April 7, Principal Kirk Moore was shot in the leg while confronting a former student who entered Pauls Valley High School with a handgun. Video footage shows Moore tackling the gunman, disarming him, and holding him down until law enforcement arrived. No students were harmed during the incident. The suspect, Victor Lee Hawkins, expressed intentions to carry out a mass shooting. Moore expressed eagerness to return to work and continue his educational mission.
