US military base in Italy locked down over 'security incident'
Briefly

Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy experienced a brief lockdown due to a security incident involving a suspicious package. Service members were instructed to stay in place on the base as Italian police and bomb squad members investigated. The alert lasted several hours but concluded with no injuries reported and confirmation that the package posed no threat. The base is a key location for NATO operations and houses advanced reconnaissance aircraft, vital for monitoring regional security.
In a post on the site’s official Facebook account, staff at the base in Sicily were told to avoid travelling between a housing complex and part of the base.
A statement from the base said that Italian police and bomb squad members inspected a suspicious package and ultimately "determined it was not a threat."
US Navy Lieutenant Andrea Perez confirmed that there had been no injuries, adding that more details of the incident would be released on Wednesday.
NAS Sigonella is outside of Catania on the island of Sicily, where American personnel work to identify possible missile threats in the region.
