Critics have long questioned the methodology behind the annual count, with most providers and academics claiming the process is an undercount.
Adrianne Todman, acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, stated, "No American should face homelessness... it is critical that we focus on evidence-based efforts to prevent and end homelessness."
The report attributed the historically high number to several factors, including a multi-year surge in home prices, a reduction in covid-era assistance, and stagnating wages.
