US detains pro-Palestinian university student from India DW 03/20/2025
Briefly

The Trump administration has detained Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University postdoctoral fellow, for alleged links to Hamas and plans to deport him. Authorities claim he spread Hamas propaganda but provided no evidence or formal charges. Georgetown University asserts it is unaware of any illegal activity by Suri and defends academic freedom. His attorney argues that targeting a scholar focused on conflict resolution raises concerns about governmental overreach in judging free speech and academic work, while Suri remains in detention pending a court hearing on his deportation.
"We are not aware of him engaging in any illegal activity, and we have not received a reason for his detention," a Georgetown spokesperson said.
"If an accomplished scholar who focuses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar," Suri's lawyer, Hassan Ahmad, said.
