President Trump has signed an executive order to release documents regarding the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., urging for transparency. The 1992 JFK Assassination Records Collection Act mandated the release of related documents by 2017 unless overruling circumstances existed. Trump noted that continued redactions are not in the public interest and stressed the need for full disclosure to the American people and the victims' families, stating his belief that records of the other two assassinations should also be made public.
I have now determined that the continued redaction and withholding of information from records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue.
Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth. It is in the national interest to finally release all records related to these assassinations without delay.
While Congress has not mandated files to be published in the deaths of Robert Kennedy and King, I believe they are also of public interest.
Trump's directive emphasizes the importance of public interest in determining the release of historical records involving significant national events.
