The General Services Administration (GSA) is initiating the process of decommissioning EV charging stations across the nation, citing their status as 'not mission critical.' This decision impacts hundreds of electric vehicle chargers, which include approximately 8,000 plugs. GSA employees have been notified that a formal announcement will come next week, detailing the shutdown process, which will involve turning off the stations completely. The agency also aims to offload newly acquired electric vehicles, further indicating a significant shift in its strategy regarding electric vehicle infrastructure.
The GSA is planning to shut down all electric vehicle chargers nationwide, stating they are 'not mission critical' and will cancel current operational contracts.
Current guidance indicates that the shutdown of chargers will be announced next week, with some regional offices already instructed to take chargers offline.
With roughly 8,000 plugs available for government and employee-owned EVs, the GSA plans to turn off these stations at the breaker, limiting charging availability.
Once chargers are decommissioned, neither Government Owned Vehicles nor Privately Owned Vehicles will be able to utilize these charging stations.
