"The Great Green Wall project was launched by the African Union in 2007, aiming to plant a wall of trees spanning 4,350 miles to combat desertification in the Sahel."
"Despite the ambitious vision and significant financial pledges from international organizations, vast amounts of money have been spent with little progress in greening the planned areas."
The Great Green Wall project was initiated in 2007 by the African Union to combat desertification across the Sahel region. It aimed to create a 4,350-mile long and 10-mile wide wall of trees, re-greening 250 million acres and sequestering 250 million tons of carbon. Despite the involvement of numerous international organizations and a projected cost of $33 billion, the project has largely failed to achieve its goals, with many areas, including Abdi Guelleh's former farm, remaining barren after 18 years.
