The release of George Glezmann, a US citizen held by the Taliban for two years, reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Qatar. Glezmann's return is the third instance of a US detainee being freed since January, indicating a possible shift in Taliban engagement with global norms. Secretary of State Marco Rubio applauded this development as a constructive step. The Taliban, still viewed as an international pariah since its 2021 takeover of Afghanistan, has been seeking normalization through these releases, despite the controversial agreements under previous US administrations.
"Glezmann's release represents a positive and constructive step. Today, after two and a half years of captivity in Afghanistan, Glezmann is on his way to be reunited with his wife," Rubio stated.
"The Taliban has previously described the release of US detainees as part of its global normalisation effort. The group remains an international pariah since its lightning takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021."
"Corbett and McKenty, however, had been allowed to leave under a deal reached during the administration of US President Joe Biden, which was also brokered by Qatar."
"No country has officially recognised the Taliban government, although several countries continue to operate diplomatic facilities in the country."
