Two suspects involved in a fatal shootout with a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Vermont had been under surveillance since January 14, 2023. Teresa Youngblut, 21, was charged, while her companion, Felix Baukholt, was killed in the altercation. The shootout occurred during a traffic stop related to an immigration inspection when Youngblut allegedly opened fire. Both Youngblut and a Border Patrol agent sustained injuries, with the agent later succumbing to wounds. Youngblut faces severe penalties if convicted of her charges.
Investigators had been performing "periodic surveillance" of Baukholt and Youngblut since Jan. 14 when a concerned citizen notified law enforcement about their behavior.
Citing evidence from the scene, an FBI agent wrote in the complaint that Youngblut fired a .40-caliber pistol at least twice from the driver's side of the Prius.
Youngblut, who was treated at a hospital for her injuries, is scheduled to appear Monday before a magistrate judge in Burlington, Vermont.
If convicted, Youngblut faces 10 years to life in prison.
