It's pretty common for people to encounter sharks. It's very uncommon for them to know about it. Humans aren't part of a shark's diet; if they attack, it's likely due to confusion or curiosity.
Relative to the number of people recreating in oceans, shark bites are incredibly rare. In 2023, there were 69 unprovoked shark bites globally, slightly above the five-year average.
