"They could stay on the ground for quite a while and they could be very strong tornadoes, EF3, which is really significant," said National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira. He emphasized how these tornadoes could inflict extensive damage over large distances, posing a severe threat to communities in the affected areas.
"The potential for dangerous storms and twisters comes as many are traveling for the holidays," highlighting that over 119 million people are projected to travel through New Year’s Day, with nearly 107 million on highways and about 8 million flying. This holiday travel surge coincides with the severe weather warnings.
Heavy rain and strong winds are also forecast for western Oregon and northern California, with meteorologist Pereira noting that an atmospheric river could lead to flash flooding and complications for travelers this weekend.
