After former President Trump canceled the National Climate Assessment (NCA), the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union are soliciting research submissions to support future reports. This action aims to sustain scientific momentum and fill gaps in climate data. Experts highlight the NCA's importance for long-term climate projections and informing public policy. The NCA, which details climate change impacts, plays a crucial role in decision-making processes related to infrastructure and emergency preparedness, reflecting the urgency of addressing climate challenges as extreme weather events continue to rise.
"We are filling in a gap in the scientific process," AGU President Brandon Jones said. "It's more about ensuring that science continues."
AMS former president Anjuli Bamzi stressed the importance of the report's future projections, saying its models are used to estimate the impacts 25 to 100 years into the future.
Texas Tech University climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said the NCA is necessary for decision-making. "People are not aware of how climate change is impacting the decisions that they are making today."
