""His passing is beyond tragic, and our family is heartbroken," Kennedy's family told WHDH. "We look forward to a thorough investigation by the Massachusetts State Police to determine who and what entities caused the events of February 5. We also urge City of Lowell officials and UMass representatives to fully investigate what occurred.""
""Dan had a huge heart and truly committed to a life of service," the union wrote. "We are shocked, and devastated.""
""Dan was just a larger than life character," former Gloucester Fire Deputy Chief Steve Aiello told Channel 7. "He was a firefighter's firefighter. One of the bravest men I've ever worked with. Loved his county, loved the community, loved his daughters, loved his family.""
Daniel Kennedy, 60, a retired Gloucester Fire lieutenant, was struck by a marked Lowell Police cruiser on Wilder Street outside the McGauvran Center on UMass Lowell's South Campus at about 6:23 p.m. last Thursday. Kennedy was transported to Lahey Hospital and died Wednesday. The police officer operating the cruiser sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. Kennedy had recently enrolled as a UMass Lowell student after retiring from the Gloucester Fire Department and intended to work with veterans' mental health. Family, colleagues, and union members called for thorough investigations by Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
