A tragic incident occurred in Seneca, Kansas, where Father Arul Carasala, 57, was fatally shot outside his parish rectory by Gary Hermesch, 66. The authorities are investigating the motive behind the shooting, which led to Hermesch's arrest on suspicion of first-degree murder. Archibishop Joseph F. Naumann expressed deep sorrow over the violence and called for prayers for both the deceased priest and the accused. Father Carasala, who became a U.S. citizen in 2011, had served the community since 2011, leaving a legacy of love and service behind.
"This senseless act of violence has left us grieving the loss of a beloved priest, leader, and friend," Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann said on Facebook.
"Let us also pray for the perpetrator, that God may touch and transform his heart," he added, stressing the need for compassion even in tragedy.
