Pres. Trump announces travel ban affecting 12 countries set to go into effect Monday
Briefly

President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation to revive the travel ban from his first term, restricting entry from a dozen nations including Afghanistan, Iran, and Somalia. This move aims to enhance national security and follows an executive order that assessed 'hostile attitudes' towards the U.S. The ban recalls Trump's previous travel restrictions implemented in 2017, which sparked significant backlash and legal challenges. While the Supreme Court upheld a version of the original ban, critics argue it unfairly targets specific communities and violates immigrants' rights.
"I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people," Trump said in his proclamation.
The list results from a Jan. 20 executive order Trump issued requiring the departments of State and Homeland Security to compile a report on 'hostile attitudes' toward the U.S.
The order, often referred to as the 'Muslim ban' or the 'travel ban,' was retooled amid legal challenges, until a version was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
Trump and others have defended the initial ban on national security grounds, arguing it was aimed at protecting the U.S.
