Briefly

Jaythan Gilder, 32, was charged with grand theft after stealing diamond earrings valued at $769,500 from Tiffany & Co. in Orlando, Florida. Posing as an N.B.A. player's representative, he selected jewelry to view in a private room. Then, in a desperate bid, he stole the earrings, managing to escape as a store employee intervened. To evade arrest, he swallowed the earrings but was apprehended later as police recovered them from his system after 12 days in the hospital.
"On Feb. 26, Mr. Gilder of Houston, using the alias Shawn and posing as a representative for an N.B.A. player on the Orlando Magic, was escorted into a private room in the back of a Tiffany & Company store in an Orlando mall."
"Mr. Gilder was looking at the jewelry when he suddenly jumped up and grabbed it... an employee pulled the ring from him. Mr. Gilder was able to flee with the earrings."
