Councilmember Shaun Abreu stated, "Rats are a very New York City problem" and described how he personally experienced rat issues, which fueled his motivation to address the problem.
Morningside Heights resident Carl Mahaney expressed his frustration by stating, "What are we going to do about this? Like, parents and families shouldn’t have to deal with this on their way to school."
Abreu emphasized the need to manage food sources for rats by saying, "The best way to handle it is by shutting off the food supply" which led to the piloting of a trash container program.
Minko Burgos shared her fear of encountering rats, particularly describing one alarming incident: "I came across a rat king... leaving them stuck in a tangled mess, and that's why I'd rather not walk alone late at night."
