She was in critical condition after first responders evacuated her and later died from her injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The New Bedford Fire Department responded around 8:30 p.m. to 396-398 Elm St. after reports of a fire with residents trapped on the home's second and third floors. Responders located only the woman inside the smoky upper floors. The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear suspicious. Nearly a dozen residents were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Fire Chief Brian Medeiros offered condolences to the woman's family and the city.
