The National Science Foundation (NSF) terminated 168 employees to adhere to an executive order by President Trump aimed at federal workforce reduction. This move affects the agency's ability to manage its $9 billion budget, significantly impacting its research programs, especially in high-demand fields such as AI and engineering. Many affected were program officers essential for evaluating and funding research grants. Concerns have been raised about losing talented professionals and the potential long-term impact on developing scientific and technical talent in the U.S. The firings have also instilled fear among remaining employees about job security.
Firing talented people, including scientists, who have already invested a year or two with the agency is a waste of resources. The U.S. needs more scientists, engineers and other technical talent.
All that work isn't going to get done. We have a need for people trained in these emerging technologies of AI and semiconductors. This is just going to totally devastate our ability to do that.
