Man arrested for demanding Bitcoin ransom from Guthrie family
"Did you get the bitcoin were [sic] waiting on our end for the transaction."
"When he said that he sent text messages he was trying to see if the family would respond,"
"To those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation, we will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions,"
A Torrance man, Derrick Callella, allegedly sent text messages to Nancy Guthrie's daughter and son-in-law demanding Bitcoin shortly after Nancy's reported abduction from her Arizona home. The messages followed a local Tucson outlet's receipt of a ransom demand that included a Bitcoin wallet address. Callella allegedly used an application to create a fake phone number tied to an email address associated with him. He allegedly admitted sending the messages after Miranda warnings. He is charged with transmitting a demand for ransom and intending to abuse, threaten, or harass via a telecommunication device. Authorities say he is not linked to the initial ransom demand.
