Critics, including lawyer Tristan Snell, suggested it undermines the Trump administration's populist image. In defense, the Homeland Security Department stated that Noem purchased the watch with proceeds from her bestselling books, intending it as a legacy item for her children.
"Tell me again how these Trumpers are just regular folks rather than wealthy oligarchs looting and grifting America," Snell wrote on X.
"Governor Noem chose to use the proceeds from her New York Times best-selling books to purchase an item she could wear and one day pass down to her children," McLaughlin said.
