John Kinsel Sr., who served from October 1942 to January 1946, was part of the second group of Marines trained as code talkers, contributing to an unbreakable code that significantly aided the Allied victory in the Pacific.
An estimated 400 Navajo Code Talkers served during World War II, with their encrypted communications based on the Navajo language helping U.S. forces communicate critical information and confuse the Japanese.
In an interview from 2019, Mr. Kinsel recalled training alongside 25 other Marines at Camp Elliott and developing additional code terms for military hardware like tanks and aircraft.
His contributions included working with his division headquarters on Bougainville Island to transcribe messages and develop code, playing a pivotal role in the successful operations of his regiment.
