Mr. Smith's filing noted that President-elect Trump is expected to be certified on Jan. 6, 2025, raising the question of whether the proceedings should continue at all.
This request to pause the election-related case is the first sign that Smith and his team are figuring out how to effectively shut down the prosecutions amid Trump's return to the White House.
