Jack Kennedy, a 17-year-old from Huntington, was awarded a wild card for the U.S. Open qualifying singles tournament. The competition will take place from Monday to Thursday of next week at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The top 16 players who win three consecutive matches will secure spots in the main draw. Kennedy, who previously ranked fifth in the world as a junior, expressed hope to make a significant impact in the tournament. The USTA also announced several other wild card recipients for both qualifying and main draw events.
"Hopefully, I'll do some damage," said Kennedy, 17, who was ranked as high as fifth in the world as a junior this year and will play for the University of Virginia this fall.
Kennedy mentioned, "For any kid from New York who's dreamed of playing tennis at the highest level, it's what we work for."
