In a photo finish, Noah Lyles won the 100-meter race by a hair, claiming his first Olympic gold medal for the U.S. Lyles ran 9.79 seconds, a personal best, beating Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. After both posted 9.79, computers revealed Lyles crossed the line five-thousandths of a second faster than Thompson.
Fred Kerley of the U.S. finished in third place just .02 seconds later, winning bronze. Lyles' victory marks the first U.S. gold in the Olympic 100m event since Justin Gatlin's win in 2004.
