Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem's recent visit to El Salvador's notorious mega-prison drew criticism due to her wearing an expensive gold Rolex watch worth around $50,000. While she recorded a social media message warning against illegal immigration, the glaring contrast between her wealth and the dire conditions in the prison incited outrage among immigration advocates. Analysts remarked on the disconnect, highlighting the insensitivity of flaunting luxury in the face of mass imprisonment, particularly in a country facing severe poverty. Noem's choice led to questions about the image she presents as a populist leader.
"If you come to our country illegally, this is one of the consequences you could face," Noem said.
"You're in front of all these people in a very poor country... it looks like you're just flaunting your wealth while you flaunt your freedom," said Adam Isacson.
"This is an administration that is trying to be populist, anti-elite, appeal to the common man; meanwhile, there's people stacked up like cordwood behind her." said Adam Isacson.
"Then-Governor Noem chose to use the proceeds from her New York Times best selling books to purchase an item she could wear and one day pass down to her children."
