HHS layoffs hit Meals on Wheels and other services for seniors and disabled
Briefly

Recent layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have drastically affected major federal programs that support aging, disability, and anti-poverty initiatives, with 40% of staff receiving layoff notices. The Administration for Community Living (ACL), which coordinates federal policy on these issues, will see its responsibilities redistributed within HHS. Former ACL director Alison Barkoff emphasizes that such layoffs will severely impact the lives of millions relying on these essential services, including meal distribution for seniors and assistance programs for low-income households, such as LIHEAP.
The programs that ACL implements improve the lives of literally tens of millions of older adults, people with disabilities and their families and caregivers.
There's no way to have these RIFs and not impact the programs and the people who rely on them.
The announcement of the coming layoffs at HHS said that ACL's responsibilities would go to different parts of HHS.
The office runs the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which helps 5.9 million low-income households pay heat and cooling bills.
