If you're an iPhone user in an area hit by the storm, you may be able to use some of its features, even if you've lost a cell signal, through a satellite connection. All iPhone 14, 15 and 16 models have the capability to connect to satellite, allowing users to send text messages to family and friends during emergencies.
To send text messages to family and friends through satellite, your phone must be updated to the latest software, iOS 18. Recipients of the messages must also have the latest iOS. Apple recommends dialing 911 for emergency use, which will connect you to Emergency SOS.
Without a cell signal, it is unlikely that you'll be able to send photos, videos or audio messages. Texts should take 30 seconds to a minute to send, and users should ensure they're outside with a clear view of the sky for effective connection.
Android users with a Pixel 9 phone from Google can also send text messages to emergency services via satellite, but not all Android phones support this feature. Alternative messaging options include apps like Signal, WhatsApp, and Messenger if broadband or Wi-Fi is accessible.
