Harvard University will improve its antisemitism policies following two federal lawsuits by adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, which includes some anti-Zionist criticisms. Critics warn this might threaten free academic discourse. Nevertheless, Harvard aims to better protect Jewish and Israeli students while ensuring transparency in handling antisemitism complaints. For the next five years, the university will share outcomes of such complaints and increase resources for researching antisemitism, including partnerships and events, while providing mandatory training for handling reports of antisemitism.
When fully implemented, this agreement will help ensure that Jewish students are able to learn and thrive in an environment free from anti-Semitic hate, discrimination, and harassment.
Harvard will adopt the broad International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance ('IHRA') definition of antisemitism, which considers certain cases of anti-Zionist or anti-Israeli criticism as antisemitism.
