Madison Askins, a 23-year-old graduate student at Florida State University, survived a shooting by remaining still and playing dead after being shot in the buttocks. She detailed her experience of closing her eyes and holding her breath while the gunman continued to reload and move through the area. After hearing police arrive and confirming the shooter was apprehended, she felt relief. Despite sustaining a serious injury with a bullet lodged in her vertebrae, Askins expressed resilience, firmly stating that she would not be overcome by this trauma.
"I released all the muscles in my body, closed my eyes and held my breath... I would take short breaths in between when I needed to."
"I knew I just needed to stay calm... I knew everything was over when we had multiple officers come over and they tell me they got him. I was able to breathe."
