Ford is recalling 492,145 Explorer SUV models from the years 2016 and 2017 due to a risk of door trim detaching while driving. The problem, first identified by Ford in 2019, was not deemed a significant safety risk initially. However, following numerous owner reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urged Ford to investigate further, resulting in the recall. Ford cited poor adhesion as the cause and plans to notify owners by June 9, offering repairs at no charge once a solution is determined.
Ford Motor Co. first recognized the problem as far back as 2019, but did not consider it an 'unreasonable risk to safety,' according to the NHTSA report.
Ford concluded that lack of proper adhesion was causing the trim to loosen, and it is unaware of accidents or injuries related to the defect.
